A tumor is an abnormal mass of tissue that results when cells grow and divide more than they should or do not die when they should. Tumors can vary in size from a tiny nodule to a large mass, depending on the type, and they can appear almost anywhere in the body.

Tumors can be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign). Benign tumors are not cancer and do not spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors are cancer and can spread to other parts of the body through the blood or lymph system.

The exact cause of tumors is unknown, but there are a number of factors that can increase the risk of developing a tumor, including:

  • Age: The risk of developing a tumor increases with age.
  • Family history: People who have a family history of cancer are at an increased risk of developing cancer themselves.
  • Environmental factors: Exposure to certain environmental factors, such as radiation, can increase the risk of developing cancer.
  • Lifestyle factors: Certain lifestyle factors, such as smoking and obesity, can increase the risk of developing cancer.
As a skincare or beauty professional, it is not within your scope of practice to diagnose or treat tumors. If you happen to notice any abnormal mass while working with a client, it is important to inform them and refer them to a qualified physician for further evaluation and treatment.
