Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose. It is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the world. Rhinoplasty can be used to change the size, shape, or angle of the nose, and to correct breathing problems caused by a deviated septum.

Types of Rhinoplasty: There are several types of rhinoplasty, which can be broadly categorized into:

  • Cosmetic Rhinoplasty: This type of surgery focuses on enhancing the aesthetic appearance of the nose, such as altering its size, shape, or symmetry.
  • Functional Rhinoplasty: This procedure aims to correct structural issues within the nose that affect breathing, such as a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates.
  • Reconstructive Rhinoplasty: This surgery is performed to repair the nose after trauma, such as an accident or injury, or to correct congenital defects.

Rhinoplasty Techniques: There are two main techniques used in rhinoplasty:

  • Open Rhinoplasty: In this approach, the surgeon makes an incision on the columella (the tissue between the nostrils) and lifts the skin, providing greater visibility and access to the nasal structures. This technique is often used for more complex cases.
  • Closed Rhinoplasty: This technique involves making incisions within the nostrils, eliminating visible scarring. It is typically used for less complicated procedures and offers a faster recovery time.

Rhinoplasty is a major surgery and it is important to choose a qualified surgeon. The surgeon will discuss your goals for the surgery and will create a plan to achieve those goals. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, and it takes about two hours.

Rhinoplasty is a major surgical procedure, and postoperative care is just as crucial as the surgery itself. Below are some helpful tips on how to assist and care for a client who has undergone rhinoplasty:

  • Wound care: Provide guidance on proper wound care, such as cleaning the incision sites, applying antibiotic ointment, and changing any dressings as needed.
  • Swelling and bruising management: Recommend cold compresses or ice packs to help reduce swelling and bruising. Encourage clients to keep their head elevated, especially during sleep, to minimize swelling.
  • Nasal hygiene: Teach clients how to maintain nasal hygiene, such as using saline spray to keep the nasal passages moist and using a humidifier in their living space.
  • Sun protection: Advise clients to protect their nose from sun exposure by wearing wide-brimmed hats and applying sunscreen with a high SPF, as the skin will be more sensitive post-surgery.
  • Skincare routine: Assist clients in adjusting their skincare routine to accommodate their healing skin. Recommend gentle, non-irritating products and avoid exfoliants or harsh ingredients until the skin has fully healed.
